Step 2: Place chopped lettuce in a large glass dish or bowl; top with a layer of red onion, peas, shredded cheese, cauliflower, and bacon.
Step 3: For the dressing: Whisk mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, and sugar together in a bowl until smooth. Drizzle over salad and refrigerate until chilled.
This is a traditional recipe that can be edited for whatever your family likes for layers. That's the nice thing about it. Although the photo is a beautiful presentation in the glass bowl---there is no way that this is conducive to serving. You could put it on the table as a beautiful centerpiece and then dump it into a large mixing bowl and toss it thoroughly. I make mine in a more shallow serving dish and mix it up with disposable gloves right before serving so all of the ingredients get coated. Everyone loves that all they have to do is dive-in. I set a small bowl of halved tiny grape tomatoes on the side so those can be added on top without getting the salad soggy.
I love the simple but delicious dressing. I make mine in a 9x13 glass cake pan. It's easier to serve and get all the layers. How I layer is with these ingredients. Lettuce, red onion, fresh broccoli, 3 hard boiled eggs, then the mayo mixture. Then I top that with the cheddar cheese and the bacon on top.
I love this salad. It is my go to whenever I need to take a salad. I also like boiled eggs in mine.
Make one change and it's awesome....Replace the cauliflower with water chestnuts
If you make this ahead of time (the night before) You might want to wait to add the dressing. Or maybe have the lettuce as the top layer. It gets soggy.
Use whatever veggies you have. It's so good! I used lettuce, shredded carrots, peas, cucumbers, red onion, sharp cheddar cheese, and boiled eggs.
Absolutely wonderful. All the textures are great.
The recipe is good - I used a trifle bowl and it looked pretty and tasted good too.
I also prefer this salad all mixed up but hubby hates it mixed. So I layer the mayo an then put the cheese over it. Back when this first became popular everyone made it in layers then mixed right before serving. I think ppl just didn't read to mix before serving and here we are lol
