Ingredients For Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings Recipes
1 (14.1 ounce) double-crust pie pastry, thawed
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
½ cup butter
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions: Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings Recipes
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter a 9x13-inch pan.
Step 2: Roll pastry into a 24x16-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Cut into six 8-inch squares. Place an apple on each pastry square with the cored opening facing upward. Cut butter into 8 pieces; place 1 piece in the opening of each apple; reserve the remaining butter for sauce.
Step 3: Divide brown sugar between apples, poking some inside each cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over apples.
Step 4: Using slightly wet fingertips, bring one corner of the pastry square up to the top of the apple, then bring the opposite corner to the top and press together. Bring up the two remaining corners, and seal. Slightly pinch the dough at the sides to completely seal in the apple. Repeat with the remaining apples and place in the prepared baking dish.
Step 5: To make the sauce: Combine water, white sugar, vanilla extract, and reserved butter in a large saucepan. Place over medium heat, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Carefully pour the sauce over dumplings.
Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and crisp on top, about 50 to 60 minutes. Place each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl, and spoon some of the sauce over the top.
I cut the white sugar back to 1.5 cups but still found it too sweet. I also found the syrup to be greasy from all the butter. The syrup was so deep in the baking pan, that the bottom half of the dough surrounding the apples did not bake. I will follow a different recipe/method with less sugar and butter next time.
We thought it was too sweet and would cut the sugar back. Sauce thickened nicely. Trying to core the apples I ended up with quartered apples so they didn’t hold their shape . I used pillsbury pie crust worked out great.I held out cinnamon and nutmeg was husband didn’t like. I tried with honey crisp, Mel rose and prima apples all were good but honey crisp was my favorite.
easy peasy and super delish!! Making another batch two days later for neighbors to enjoy--I added chopped walnuts to the brown sugar mixture before wrapping the apples and yummy
OMG...these are amazing. I'm so glad I discovered this in the Fall. It will be my "go to dessert" from now until next summer. Easy to make and it comes out just the way it's supposed to if you follow the receipe exactly.
I made these last evening. They were delicious. I made 4, using store bought pie crust. Just right!
did not like all the liquid it had to cook in. Thought it would turn to a syrup but it was still liquidy
I made it as exact as I could to recipe and it came out phenomenal. . I was trying to make these as close to my moms recipe and I might have come CLOSE. THANKS!
I made this for dessert on a beautiful Fall Sunday. They were so fun for my daughter and I to make together! After the first half hour I covered in foil. They came out beautifully! Just delicious as is or even better with some vanilla ice cream!
I read a few recipes and they are all pretty much similar to this olde fashioned one.. the only thing I altered is instead of water for the syrup I used apple cider.. they’re in the oven now and I can’t wait till they are done and cool a little bit before I can enjoy this first time I’ve made an apple dumpling ! Thanks to all who helped with this recipe!! -john G
